Traffic warning post is a sign that warns drivers of road conditions or situations that could cause accidents, a change in roadway direction, and other important safety information. It is essential for maintaining a safe and effective traffic flow in both public and private roadways.
The signs are often used to indicate traffic lights, fire stations, airfields, and other traffic controls that are in the vicinity of a highway. They also can be used to warn of changes in a roadway's class or type (e.g., widening, narrowing) or to indicate a passing lane that is about to start or end.
Typically, the signs are triangular in shape with a red border and white background; however, they can be diamond-shaped or square-shaped in some European countries. In some countries, the signs are black on a yellow background and in others, they are black on an orange background; they may include a symbol or text only.
In some regions, the signs are used to warn of certain hazards such as stray animals, falls in a roadway, or a low-flying aircraft. They can be accompanied by pictographs or written text to explain the hazard.
These are common around quarry sites, airports, industrial zones, military installations and rural areas. They typically consist of an exclamation mark on a triangular warning sign followed by auxiliary signs in the local language identifying the hazard, obstacle or condition.
Signs that are removed or vandalized by pranksters, souvenir hunters, scrappers and other unauthorized persons can lead to costly replacements. Some jurisdictions affix theft-deterrent stickers to the back sides of the signs.
